I've been doing a bit of research about how much it would possibly cost to visit the UK this morning. Ever since I met M at the open house in Singapore Poly, we've been best mates. We've played around with the idea of going overseas for good holidays, to Europe, just the few of us from SG, once we have the funds to do so.
Looking at current prices from the SIA website, it's SGD1250.00, SGD1450.00 and SGD1700.00 for a minimum of four, two people, and an individual to travel, respectively. They're also all in economy. I dread to look at the figures for Business class or above. I'm not sure if that's a return ticket, but let's just say for this instance that it is a one-way ticket situation. Taking the individual traveller situation, SGD1700.00 x 2 = SGD3400.00. That's nearly about two months salary, when I'm going to be working in Singapore! (Based on a hypothetical take home pay of 2k.) Ye Gads! That's not even covering accommodation and miscellaneous expenses on the trip itself! (Not even daily expenses in SG!) So I reckon, unless I win the lottery and/or live frugally, I won't be able to save enough to have a proper holiday in Europe.
Been looking at banks as well in Singapore and I'm thoroughly not impressed at the interest rates. It's not even worth looking at! Certain banks require a certain amount to be in the daily balance, some require a four figure sum which I think is ridiculous, otherwise they charge an administrative fee. Like there's a need to look after such a paltry sum of money in the first place, in front of the computer. Mind you, I'm no financial genius, far from it, but just a humble graduate that needs to save $$$$$ instead of throwing it to the banks via administration fees. Some banks even charge for having a debit card, another stupid thing, in my humble opinion as a consumer. If a bank wanted us to use the card, wouldn't they make it free for us to use and not charge a fee for actually having the card? I suppose it could perhaps be about the element of exclusivity of having the card that determines its attraction to particular consumers. However, I'm a currently a believer of having a fee-free banking situation. So that's what I'm going to be looking at and hunting for when I get back home and get a job.
Question, would anyone know in Singapore, of a bank that provides good discounts on petrol with debit cards? Let's start a discussion! :-)
